CHARLIE CHAPLIN
Richard Patrick Bennett, better known by the stage name Charlie Chaplin, is a Jamaican dancehall, reggae singer & DJ. It was common for Jamaican DJ’s of the era to name themselves after film stars or characters. Bennett, however, had been nicknamed after the comedian since his youth. His career began in 1980 when he began working with U-Roy’s Stur-Gav Hi-Fi collective. He became extremely popular throughout Jamaica, memorable for his focus on cultural and social themes instead of the “slack” (rough, violent) Lyrics that were popular at the time. His popularity as a live performer prompted Roy Cousin’s to produce some recording sessions with the young DJ. Chaplin’s debut album was the Cousins produced Presenting Charlie Chaplin in 1982, with several albums following for the producer over the next three years.
The contrast between Chaplin’s “culture” lyrics and the other major DJ’s of the day led to the 1984 “clash” album with Yellowman Slackness Vs Pure Culture. Que Dem (1985), was produced by George Phang and he continued recording, working with Bunny Roots, Josey Wales, Sly & Robbie, Henry “Junjo” Lawes, Roots Radics and Doctor Dread. KingsKrown Music will be releasing a new body of work by Charlie Chaplin that will inspire music lovers to revisit the living legend’s discography and take them down memory lane.

HUGO BARRINGTON
The rural district of Union in St. Elizabeth, offered the typical childhood experiences for a young Hugo Barrington.
While the beauty of Country living was treasured, the love for music was developing. Barrington’s mother observed that he had an affinity for music second to no other interest. In fact a family member, Wilfred “Jackie” Edwards had tasted musical success and this was not lost on the young singer. Following his success at the then Common Entrance Examination for Secondary School, Barrington was placed at Munro College, a boarding institution in South Eastern St. Elizabeth.
With a few of his colleagues, Barrington helped to form a school band, which resulted in performances at Hampton School, Manchester High,Munro School Fair and Bethlehem Moravian Teachers College.
Barrington honed his craft being an ardent fan of Jacob Miller, the Chosen Few, The Tamlins, Temptations, Blue Magic, Chi-lites and Ron Banks and the Dramatics.
On completion of High School, the Singer put further studies on hold and entered the work world with an eye on pursuing a music career.
While a teller at the King Street Branch of The Bank of Nova Scotia, Hugo Barrington was introduced to producer “King Jammys” James by the owner of Kilamanjaroo Sound, Noel Harper. At the time, mid 1986, Harper was a Loans Officer at the same branch Barrington worked.
The Jammy’s link resulted in a hit song by September of 1986, “Loving is a Thing”. The street re-named the song “Lawdy Lawdy” The Jammys Song hit the top 10 on the then JBC Radio Chart and featured on the top 100 songs of 1986 and 1987. Several singles followed including Respect Due.
In 1987, Barrington recorded a remake of Gregory Abbot’s “Its Over” for Producer Bobby Digital who was a studio Engineer at Jammy’s St. Lucia Road Studio in Waterhouse, St. Andrew.”It’s Over” went to Number One on the Reggae Charts compiled by WNWK Radio of which Radio personality Clinton Lindsay was a part.
The success of the Song resulted in Barrington recording an album “Presenting Hugo” for Whitfield “Witty” Henry’s Music Master Label. By this time Barrington was enrolled at CARIMAC UWI, pursuing a degree in Mass Communications. Studies restricted the availability of Barrington to accept all engagements opened up by the success of “It’s Over”. Nevertheless Barrington honoured engagements in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Connecticut for Tamika Productions.
In 1992 Barrington entered the Faculty of Law at The Barbados Campus of the University of the West Indies. While in Barbados the singer performed at a Bridgetown Club for a Vincentian Promoter and also at Campus events.
Combining professional endeavours and artistic passion, inspired the lovers rock/soul singer to commence a concert series called “Professionals in Cabaret”. Doctors, Lawyers, Buisness and other Professionals who were gifted artistically were offered an avenue to display their talents. The Series ran for six annual editions.
Barrington admits that since graduating from the Norman Manley Law School in 1996 and being called to The Bar in the same year, the time he devotes to music has been altered. He however finds as much time as possible to be part of the Praise Team and Senior Choir of Church of the Transfiguration in Meadowbrook, St Andrew.
The Singer who is gifted with a falsetto-sounding voice has written songs for other artistes including “Report to me” recorded by Gregory Issacs for Gussie Clarke’s Music Works. In addition to Jammys and Digital B labels, Barrington has also recorded for George Phang, Witty’s Music Master,Gussie Clarke, Ivor Broderick, Charlie Chaplin, Kings Krown Music and producer Hubert “Bertie” Kerr.
Barrington credit’s Charlie Chaplin for being a shining light in his career especially the live performances on sound systems such as Jah Love, Kilamanjaro, Peoples Choice and many others.
Barrington gives thanks for the many promoters who have provided a platform for him to sing his heart out, including Reggae Sunsplash and Isaiah Laing’s Addison Park Show in Brown’s Town. Music has also taken the Singer to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to perform for Jamaicans on the Military base celebrating Jamaica’s Independence. He has also performed in Miami.
Hugo Barrington’s latest project is “Secret Affair” a lovers rock number for KingsKrown label with help from Chaplin and Canadian-based Sean “Baller” Walsh. The artist is hoping that a song he co-wrote with the late Crown Prince of Reggae Dennis Brown and Bertie Kerr will attract the interest of KingsKrown Music. Dennis Brown performed the song , produced by Kerr.

RICKY CHAPLIN
Wilfred Anthony Chambers was born in Kingston on the 26th July 1961 to musical parents. His mother sang in her church choir and his father performed with a band. Ricky Chaplin and his elder brother Charlie Chaplin enjoyed watching their parents perform and eventually they both became a part of Jamaica’s music industry. To gain recognition Ricky Chaplin performed on almost every sound system including Ray Symbolic, Tape Tone, King Jammys, Jah Love and Socialist Roots. He also performed with pioneer artists such as U Roy, Prince Jazzbo, I Roy and Dillinger. His hard work and determination was recognized by the late Phillip ‘Fattis’ Burrell who, after seeing him perform on the Sugar Minott owned Youth Man Promotion sound system, invited him to record at Dynamic Sounds Recording Studio. From that studio session Ricky Chaplin’s first single entitled ‘Whole Wide World’ was released which did well in the United Kingdom. That same year his album ‘Skin Up’ was also released. Other releases include a single produced by Cedella Marley called ‘Unity’ which reached number one on the reggae charts in San Diego, California. Ricky Chaplin, a Rastafarian has toured Europe and performed in venues in Brussels and Paris where he is known for his distinctive command of the stage. In the United Kingdom he played venues in Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. His most memorable performances were in Africa where in Senegal he rapidly learnt the native Wolof language to perform for his brothers and sisters there. He has shared the stage with Stephen Marley, Rita Marley and Erykah Badu and was always well received by audiences at Sting, Pier One, White River Reggae Bash and other major events island wide. In 2006 he was part of the All-star line-up including other legends like Linval Thompson, Tappa Zukie, Prince Jazzbo, Earl 16, U Brown and Triston Palma at Reggae Geel festival and performed with Prince Jazzbo at Ja’ Sound festival in France.
